Atlanta, GA, United States (4E) – 21 Savage was arrested by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Sunday morning based on a claim that the rapper is actually a British citizen and has overstayed his visa.

ICE spokesman Bryan Cox told said that 21 Savage, whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was taken into custody after a “targeted operation” in Atlanta, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The rapper was arrested at a traffic stop in Dekalb County together with three other companions.

Although 21 Savage has identified himself as an Atlanta native and is widely considered as a local act in the area, Cox said that he is an “unlawfully present United Kingdom national” who came to the U.S. in July 2005 when he was only 12 years old. His visa, however, already expired last year.

21 Savage is being placed in “removal proceedings before the federal immigration courts.”

ICE also said that the “A Lot” rapper was convicted of drug charges in 2014. At the time of his arrest, ICE was not yet aware of his immigration status. It was only later that authorities learned that he is in fact from the UK.

21 Savage previously shared about spending his childhood in Atlanta. Speaking to Fader magazine in 2016, he said that he was expelled from school in Atlanta when he was around 12 or 13 for taking a gun to class. He also mentioned that the first time he saw a gun was when he was eight years old, although there was no mention of where he resided at the time.

According to BBC, news about 21 Savage’s alleged “false persona” shocked Atlanta and he is considered as one of the city’s greatest homegrown artists. The rapper is known throughout the city as he frequently donates to charity and even launched his own campaign to promote financial literacy among children.
