Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – Ariana Grande took to Instagram to share a photo of her brain scan, which indicates the possible effects of post-traumatic stress disorder on the brain.
Grande, who’s been very vocal about mental health awareness, shared a screenshot that included a photo of her brain scan, saying that while it is “hilarious and terrifying,” it is certainly “not a joke.”
The screenshot shows a side-by-side comparison between the brain scan of a “healthy brain” and a scan of a “PTSD brain”. The latter shows several highlighted areas, whereas a healthy brain doesn’t have any. The singer’s brain scan shows several highlighted areas on her brain.
PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can develop in people who have witness or went through a traumatic experience. Professor of Psychiatry Charles B. Nemeroff, M.D., Ph.D of The University of Texas at Austin said that there are changes in the brains of patients that suffer from PTSD.
He told CNN that while PTSD does change the way brain responds to trauma or other situations, there are no particular brain imaging tests that can be used to conclusively diagnose PTSD.
The 25-year-previously opened up about her anxiety and having “signs of PTSD” in an interview with British Vogue.
She told the glossier that the symptoms became manifest after the Manchester bombing in May 2017, which took place after Grande’s concert. She said that dizziness and anxiety were among the signs of her PTSD.
“That’s what everyone was telling me. It’s hard to talk about because so many people have suffered such severe, tremendous loss,” Grande spoke about her condition and the incident.
