New York City, NY, United States (4E) – Comedian Aziz Ansari surprised his audience during a stand-up comedy set at New York City when he tackled the time when he was accused of sexual misconduct last year, amidst the pitchforks of the #MeToo movement.
Vulture reporter Jesse David Fox wrote about the show in detail where upon addressing the ‘elephant of the room’ “Ansari sat down, and his voice turned somber.”
The ‘Master of None’ actor told the audiences that the allegation was no laughing matter for him. Ansari says that the incident made him feel “upset and humiliated and embarrassed, and ultimately I just felt terrible,” that the accuser, still unnamed, felt that way about him. He adds that looking back on it now made him think about his actions in the past and in the present and he hopes that he came out of it as a better person.
Last year, an anonymous 23-year old photographer, shared her experience to a website titled, Babe, about being forced to have oral sex with the comedian. The accuser met Ansari during the Emmy Awards Show and the whole time they were together she showed him verbal and non-verbal cues that she was distressed of the situation. She says that she cried all the way home after the incident and would describe it as a sexual violation.
Ansari responded to the allegation saying that he indeed met the woman and had dinner with her but everything that happened subsequently was consensual. The next day he received a message from her about what happened and he responded to her privately, taking her words to heart and processing what she had said.
During his show, Ansari shares that it gave him perspective on his life and that he was afraid he might not be able to do comedy again after that. Despite the gaffe, Ansari thanked the audience, emphasizing that this time he really meant it, not as a mere thing to say at the end of the show, but towards giving him the chance and opportunity to perform again.
