Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – Celebrity chef Mario Batali is facing criminal charges for allegedly groping a woman and forcibly kissing her at a restaurant in Boston.

Batali is being charged with indecent assault and battery and will be arraigned on Friday this week, the Suffolk county district attorney’s office confirmed.

According to a filing obtained by The Boston Globe, the incident took place at Towne Stove and Spirts in March 2017 where she took a photo of the chef. When Batali saw her taking the picture, he offered to take a selfie with her, after which he put his arm around her and grabbed her chest. The woman also claimed that Batali went on to kiss her and started touching her groin.

If found guilty, Batali could face up to two and a half years in prison and would be registered as a sex offender.

Batali previously faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, but this is the first time he is being criminally charged.

Online food publication Eater published an expose in December 2017 where four women accused Batali of sexual harassment. Following the report, Batali issued an apology to his fans via his newsletter and he also left the ABC daytime program ‘The Chew’.

Earlier this year, Batali gave up all of his restaurants, including the Italian food hall Eataly, and his shares which were subsequently bought by the Bastianich family, CNBC reported.

In a statement to NBC Boston on Wednesday, Batali’s lawyer, Anthony Fuller, said the chef denies the allegations in both the civil and criminal complaints. Fuller further maints that the charges brought by the plaintiff do not have an basis or merit.
