‘Empire’ Actor Jussie Smollett Victim of Homophobic And Racial Attack

Chicago, IL, United States (4E) – ‘Empire’ actor Jussie Smollett was hospitalized early Tuesday after a racial and homophobic attack in Chicago.

According to E News, the actor was fresh from a New York trip, he was walking when two unknown belligerents approached him and started yelling racial and homophobic slurs towards the actor. The offenders started to pound Smollett, mostly towards his face, and poured an in-line chemical substance to him. The news media site further reports that one of the attackers wrapped a rope around his neck and fled the scene leaving the actor with serious injuries. Gaining his strength and consciousness, he rushed himself to Northwestern Hospital and is said to be in good condition.

TMZ reports that the actor arrived in Chicago around 2 AM and went to a Subway. The attack happened as he was leaving. Variety confirms that Smollett was attacked in the 300 block of E. North Water Street.

The Chicago Police Department released a statement about the incident theorizing that it is was a possible hate crime. Chief Spokesman Anthony Gugliemi told E News that the Chicago Police Department received a report of a possible racially-charged assault and battery involving a cast member a television show. He further adds that the they are seriously investigating the crime and that their detectives are working hard to gather video footage, identify possible witnesses and establishing an investigative timeline.

“The victim is fully cooperating with investigators,” Gugliemi says. “We ask anyone with information about this incident to contact Area Central Detectives at 312-747-8382 or report it anonymously to www.cpdtip.com.”

Smollett is an openly gay man and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has released a statement saying that the actor is a “true champion for LGBTQ people” and offered their assistance and support for him.
