Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – What started out as a joke on the show might actually one of the biggest plot twists on “Family Guy” yet. The Fox animated series has declared that it will no longer be using gay jokes on the show.

On Sunday night’s episode of “Family Guy”, the show put the highlight Peter Griffin in a face-off against U.S. President Donald Trump. Peter chronicled his time as press secretary to Trump, who was described on the show as a “fat idiot who once had a television show and who over time has worn out his welcome.”

One scene in this particular episode that caught everyone’s attention was when Griffin told Trump that “Family Guy” is “trying to phase out” gay jokes. In an interview with TVLine, executive producers Alec Sulkin and Rich Appel confirmed that they are indeed removing gay jokes from their content.

“If you look at a show from 2005 or 2006 and put it side by side with a show from 2018 or 2019, they’re going to have a few differences,” Sulkin said. “Some of the things we felt comfortable saying and joking about back then, we now understand is not acceptable.”

Appel added that the show is catching up with the current political and cultural climate. The show is evolving and is being shaped by the present reality.

“Family Guy” is no stranger to receiving backlash from making gay jokes. In 2010, the show was criticized for an episode where Brian sleeps with Quagmire’s parent, a transgender who identifies as a woman. When Brian finds out, he begins vomiting on the floor in disgust.

“With jokes that can seem to cross the line, we do a good job of monitoring ourselves,” Appel told Entertainment Weekly about the show’s decision to phase out homophobic jokes. “And the ultimate judge is: Is it funny enough? If you’re going to be offensive in some way, it better really funny and something kind of new.”
