Paris, France (4E) – French people throughout the world are set to celebrate Bastille Day Sunday in a reminder of a riot in 1789 that helped establish the nation’s democracy in its pursuit of equality.

A military parade down the Champs-Élysées, one of the city’s major avenues, marks the event.

People party throughout Paris during the day as thousands of others dance and cheer the nation along the parade route.

Over 4,000 soliders, 200 vehicles and 100 aircraft take part in the parade and other countries also take part to acknowledge their ties to France during Bastille Day.

Important EU leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister Theresa May, will take in Sunday’s festivities with French President Emmanuel Macron.

U.S. President Donald Trump joined Macron in Paris for the festivities two years ago, while leaders of Japan and Singapore attended last year.
