Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – ‘Jeopardy’ host Alex Trebek recently sat down with ‘Good Morning America’ host Robin Roberts for his first live interview since revealing his cancer battle earlier this year. In this interview, Trebek opened up about chemotherapy, having bouts of depression, and surviving it all.
Trebek, despite going through difficult treatments, was not alone in his journey as he received an outpouring of support from fans, colleagues, and fellow cancer survivors.
“People all over America have been sharing their good thoughts, their advice, their prayers—and I feel it is making a difference in my well-being,” Trebek told Roberts. He added that he has talked to many cancer survivors who have overcome their illness for 10 years or so. Trebek is now a “30-day cancer survivor” and he hopes to catch up to those other people.
While his oncologist tells him he’s doing well, Trebek sometimes doesn’t feel that way. Although he’s used to dealing with physical pain, what he’s having difficulty dealing with is “the surges that come on suddenly of deep, deep sadness. And it brings tears to my eyes.”
However, the 78-year-old remains hopeful and positive and said that he’s “fighting through it.”
“I’ve got another chemo next week, and then we’ll do a review to find out where things stand,” he said about his current condition. He also shared how chemotherapy affects people in different ways, adding there’s nothing wrong with admitting if you’re depressed or feeling down suddenly for no particular reason.
Trebek was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March. In a video he addressed to fans, Trebek promised he will fight the cancer and beat it, Vanity Fair reported. He also jokingly said that he has to because the terms of his contract indicate that he still has to host ‘Jeopardy!’ for three more years.
