Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – John Cena’s participation in the “Royal Rumble” this year is in question after the wrestler suffered an injury on his ankle from last week’s “Raw” event.

WWE confirmed that Cena’s ankle was injured during the four-way match. The injury seemed to have taken place when Drew McIntyre trapped Cena in an ankle lock submission hold. Towards the end of the match, Cena appeared to be struggling to stand with his right foot. His injury was confirmed thereafter.

Finn Balor ultimately emerged victorious and is now about to face Universal champion Brock Lesnar for the Box Office event on Sunday.

Cena’s appearance in the “Royal Rumble” is now in doubt as the wrestler exacerbated his injury while training his legs at the gym.

“The situation goes from bad to worse as during training session, John re-aggravated the injury,” the official statement from WWE on Twitter read.

Cena, however, remained positive despite his injury. He wrote on Twitter, “Setbacks are just another chance to find triumph! Never give up!”

However, some sources suggest that Cena’s ankle injury may not be real and that there may be other reasons for his anticipated absence on “Royal Rumble”. According to Comicbook, he is about to film “Playing With Fire” in Vancouver and will be unavailable for the WWE in the next few months.

Cena planned to join the 30-man “Royal Rumble” in order to dethrone Ric Flair from having the record for world-title championships. Cena was targeting a “WrestleMania” title win this time.

According to sources, Seth Rollins and McIntyre are both favorites to win “Royal Rumble” and eventually come face to face in the “WrestleMania” bout.
