Chicago, IL, United States (4E) – Jussie Smollett’s assault case will be heard by the grand jury early next week, authorities revealed.
According to authorities, the brothers who were arrested for their involvement in the attack are still living around the Loop in downtown Chicago, TMZ reports. After their release, they were kept under surveillance by the police so that they will not be contacted by anyone else, particularly Smollett.
Newly-discovered evidence suggested that Smollett may have orchestrated the attack by paying the two men, law enforcement sources told CNN. The two men are cooperating fully with the authorities.
During a raid of the home of the two brothers, police found magazines with pages ripped off and they are now trying to determine if these pages are connected to the letter threatening Smollett eight days before the attack.
According to sources, police asked Smollett if he would sign complaints against his attackers if arrested.
However, when he found out that the people arrested in connection with the crime are the two brothers, the actor allegedly said he knew them, felt bad for them, and thus declined to press charges.
Smollett has denied staging the attack and in a statement made through his attorneys, Todd S. Paugh and Victor P. Henderson, the actor “is angered and devastated by recent reports that the perpetrators are individuals he is familiar with.” The actor’s camp maintain he was a victim of a hate crime.
The ‘Empire’ actor’s attorneys said they are cooperating with Chicago police on the investigation and will continue discussions about the case “through official channels.”
