Manhattan, NY, United States (4E) – Liam Neeson is currently under fire after making an inappropriate racist admission in an interview with The Independent.

Neeson, who stars in the new film ‘Cold Pursuit’, revealed that he wanted to kill a black guy after finding out a family member had been raped. Neeson shared that his family member “handled the situation of rape in the most extraordinary way.” Instinctively, he asked if she knew who her attacker was. She said she didn’t know the man. When Neeson asked “what color were they,” she said that it was a “black person.”

It was then that Neeson revealed that for a week he contemplated on killing a black guy for revenge.

“I’m ashamed to say that, and I did it for maybe a week — hoping some [Neeson gestures air quotes with his fingers] ‘black b******’ would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could kill him,” The Independent quotes Neeson.

Neeson admitted that his reaction to the rape was “awful”, but he revealed that it took him sometime to calm down. “It was horrible, horrible, when I think back, that I did that.”

Tom Bateman, Neeson’s ‘Cold Pursuit’ co-star was also shocked by his revelation. Even the journalist who interview Neeson had to speak to a psychologist to “help contextualize his racism.”

Neeson, however, learned a lesson from this time in his life. Growing up in Northern Ireland and being exposed to violence, he has learned that revenge doesn’t work in the long run.

“I understand that need for revenge, but it just leads to more revenge, to more killing and more killing, and Northern Ireland’s proof of that,” Neeson said in the interview. “All this stuff that’s happening in the world, the violence, is proof of that, you know. But that primal need, I understand.”

Variety and CNN has reached Neeson’s reps to comment on the matter.

Neeson’s story has been met with backlash and the 66-year-old actor has been called “racist.” His comment has sparked calls to boycott his new film.
