Mexican authorities decided to turn an American Boeing 737 jet into a public library in the Mexico City borough of Iztapalapa, as part of its “Utopias” cultural program, which aims to transform public spaces in the unsafe neighborhood of the Mexican capital.

On Monday, the Iztapalapa Mayor Clara Brugada Molina announced the opening of the library in a Twitter post, pointing out that the public library would be called “Volando a la Utopia.”

“When we bet on reading and books, we bet on knowledge, education, science and culture; we invest in the present, but build for the future. #VolandoALaUTOPÍA aims to bring children and young people closer to discovering the world through words,” the Mayor wrote on her Twitter account.

Brugada also pointed out that she and the authorities of her party hope that the public library will revive a part of the borough that was previously a hangout for people using alcohol and drugs. She added that the library could change this reality for good.

“We want all girls and boys to come and read at the #AirplaneLibrary and want the community to appropriate this space,” she said in another tweet.
