Prince Andrew steps away from royal duties “for the foreseeable future”

Prince Andrew has stepped away from his royal duties “for the foreseeable future” as the controversy over his friendship with convicted sex-offender Jeffrey Epstein lingers.
The move reportedly comes with the blessing of Queen Elizabeth II and sidelines Andrew, 59, about four decades earlier than his father, Prince Philip, 98, who retired in 2017.
“Prince Andrew is ‘stepping down’ in response to a wave of self-induced scandal & poor choices but itâs extraordinary to think heâs effectively retiring from royal life 37 years before his father did,” longtime royal commentator Victoria Arbiter posted on Twitter.
Andrew, who denies ever having sex or a relationship with a 17-year-old female whom Epstein allegedly offered up to his then friend, attempted to quell the controversy via an interview with the BBC that aired last weekend.
It wasn’t well received by either the British media or Epstein accusers in the U.S., however, perhaps leading to Andrew’s move to step away from his duties.
Andrew tried to show compassion over the matter with a statement.
â(Epstein’s) suicide has left many unanswered questions, particularly for his victims, and I deeply sympathize with everyone who has been affected and wants some form of closure,” Andrew’s statement said. “I can only hope that, in time, they will be able to rebuild their lives.”
