Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – “You gotta think like a woman but act harder than a man/ Show love like a woman but take advantage like a man/ Sacrifice like a woman but tell lies like a man/ If you want to make America great again.”

Those are the lyrics to RnB singer Syleena Johnson’s new song, ‘Woman’, written by her in “frustration”, “anger” and “confusion” in the midst of the MeToo movement and recently, the #MuteRKelly movement.

The song is a far cry from the song that launched Johnson’s career, ‘I Am Your Woman’, one of the songs written by disgraced RnB singer-songwriter R Kelly who has been accused of sexually abusing and imprisoning young women through numerous allegations, lawsuits and a documentary series on Lifetime.

Johnson sat down with Billboard to talk about the harrowing pain the R Kelly song has brought to her. She tells Billboard that she is ditching the song and could never perform it anymore— she told the Associated Press that when she recorded the song she did not know what the lyrics truly implied but now she knows better, she has to.

‘I Am Your Woman’ is full of context clues in the lyrics when dissected betwixt the light of sexual abuse accusations against R Kelly, which his legal team has vehemently denied.

Johnson’s talk show, Sister Circle, was what catapulted her to write her empowered new single for her album of the same name. She says that the show forced her to confront the R Kelly issue despite treating the latter like a brother although it had been years since they spoke to each other. She says that in light of the allegations, she is a woman first and that she cannot tolerate such behavior by men, specifically Kelly, towards women.

The singer told Billboard that she was never assaulted by Kelly because there were always people around when they were together.

Despite reports that Kelly played a major role in Johnson’s career, she disputed this saying that she was never under him as they were labelmates at Sony Jive Records.
