Bangkok, Thailand (4E) – Thailand’s king had married his deputy head of personal security detail, making her queen.

The surprise event for King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 66, comes on the heels of Saturday’s consecration of the position.

King Vajiralongkorn “has decided to promote General Suthida Vajiralongkorn Na Ayudhya, his royal consort, to become Queen Suthida and she will hold royal title and status as part of the royal family,” a royal statement read.

The pair have been seen in public together frequently for several years, though their relationship has never been officially disclosed.

Video footage of the king pouring sacred water on the head of Queen Suthida has been released. The couple then go on to sign a marriage registry.

The king has previously been married and divorced three times and has seven children.
