Tech giant Twitter officially laid out its plan for banning political advertising as campaigns for next year’s presidential election heat up.

On Friday, Twitter announced its plans not only of banning political ads but also for banning those that advocate for a certain outcome on political and social causes.

On this issue, Twitter Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey said that the social media giant will define political content under its policy as anything that references “a candidate, political party, elected or appointed government official, election, referendum, ballot measure, legislation, regulation, directive, or judicial outcome. We believe political message reach should be earned, not bought.”

Last month, the company announced that it would ban political advertising as different social media platforms have faced growing calls to stop accepting those ads that spread fake news and could determine the outcome of certain elections.

One of the main companies that refused to take this step was Facebook, which said that it didn’t want to suppress political speech. This move received serious criticism from both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.
