Layton, UT, United States (4E) – A teenager in Utah crashed his car after driving blindfolded as part of the “Bird Box” challenge.
The 17-year-old girl fell victim to the social media challenge, which is based on Netflix’s hit horror film starring Sandra Bullock. The incident took place on Layton Parkway on Monday and the teenager will face charges of reckless driving.
Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman said that teenager was driving a pickup truck with a 16-year-old boy when she attempted the “Bird Box” Challenge. She was said to have used a beanie to cover her eyes.
According to Deseret News, the female driver was traveling at about 35 mph when swerved into oncoming traffic and hit another passenger car on the driver’s side. The impact from the collision spun the girl’s car, which hit a light pole and a concrete barrier.
“Honestly I’m almost embarrassed to have to say ‘Don’t drive with your eyes covered’ but you know apparently we do have to say that,” Lyman told Fox13
The dangerous challenge is inspired by the horror film, which shows Bullock’s character, as well as the others in the film, do activities while being blindfolded in order to avoid being killed by an unidentified monster that attacks those who look with their eyes. The challenge requires participants to do tasks while wearing a blindfold, copying the characters in the film.
Other participants have attempted doing ordinary things with a blindfold, such as carrying heavy weights at the gym, playing baseball, and going up the escalator.
Netflix has issued a warning against the “Bird Box” challenge in a tweet, saying “We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to the memes.”
