A group of Chilean veterinaries set up a shelter for pets in the city of Valparaiso, which has been heavily affected by a fire that has swept through one of the poorest communities over the last few days.

The veterinarians took this decision after noticing that in addition to the hundreds of people who the fire left without home, this situation also happened with several pets.

“She can´t have understood what happened. I suppose we were lucky to have found her alive, but it hurts the soul to see a little animal like that,” said 55-year-old veterinarian Gilda Medel.

Veterinarian Samuel Tapia said “We are working with the municipality of Valparaíso to get a temporary home approved for the animals that are in good condition and not injured in the fire, but are now without owners, or owners that have nowhere for them to stay because their homes were destroyed.”

A day after the fire started on Christmas Eve, the city mayor said that authorities suspect this could have been caused by anti-government protesters.
